Underfloor Heating Repair & Nest Thermostat Installation in Hagley
When underfloor heating only runs while the radiators are switched on, the fault may lie in how the heating zones are controlled. At this Hagley property, Central Heating Hub West Midlands Ltd investigated that exact symptom and restored independent control of both zones.

The problem: underfloor heating depended on the radiator thermostat
The home had a combi boiler serving separate radiator and underfloor heating zones. A Google Nest third-generation Heat Link controlled the radiators. As part of this visit, we upgraded the underfloor heating zone from a Salus wireless thermostat receiver to a Google Nest Thermostat E.
With the main heating switched on, both zones could be enabled. With the radiator heating off, the underfloor heating could not respond independently to its own thermostat.
What our fault finding established
Electrical testing traced the problem through the heating controls, wiring centre and two-port motorised zone-valve circuit. The underfloor heating control supply depended on a secondary output from the main Nest controller.
The existing arrangement used the main controller's hot-water relay function to enable the underfloor heating, even though the boiler was a combi. This linked the operation of the two heating zones unnecessarily.
The repair and confirmed result
We replaced the Honeywell two-port motorised valve and disconnected the obsolete control arrangement. We reconfigured the heating controls so that each thermostat could operate its own zone. The Nest Thermostat E controlled the underfloor heating valve using an appropriate external heating-control supply; the main Nest continued to control the radiator zone.
Following the alterations, the radiator heating and underfloor heating were tested and confirmed working independently. The customer no longer needed to switch on the radiator heating to obtain underfloor heating.

Does this symptom always mean the same fault?
No. This was the diagnosis for this particular installation. Similar symptoms can have different causes, so the thermostat settings, control wiring and zone-valve operation need to be checked before deciding on a repair. A thermostat change alone does not establish that the complete heating-control arrangement is correct.
The work involved mains-voltage heating controls and professional electrical testing. This case study describes the repair outcome rather than providing rewiring instructions.
